Progression Overview

Core Technical vs Specialist Technical

Technical skills are broken into Core and Specialist.

Core Technical skills

Core Technical skills are relevant to all engineering and developer roles so are required by all.

Specialist Technical skills

Specialist Technical skills are chosen specialisms by the individual. These may be self-selected or guided by your line manager. You are expected to satisfy at least 2 out of the 8 skills at your appropriate level.

There are specialist technical skills that are required by role. For example a frontend developer would be required to achieve the “Design Implementation & UX” skill

For engineers or developers who consider themselves “full-stack”, more specialist skills are be included.

Do I Need To Satisfy All These Skills?

In an ideal world, all engineers/developers would satisfy the required level of every skill for their role (including their chosen electives). The reality is that we all have strengths and weaknesses. There will be some areas that you shine more at than others - this is normal. It doesn't mean that you shouldn't strive to improve these skills to be the best you can be, but in most cases, you will not be held back because you are lacking aspects of some skills (as long as they are not fundamental to your role).

Making A Plan For Progression

You’ll use RTG sessions with your line manager to review your progress against your chosen pathway. Remember to record your achievements and endorsements regularly, set your goals, ask for feedback often to assess your progress. Make a plan for progression early and get started on the road to gaining the experience and evidence you need to get promoted.

If you're lacking training then seek it out through the courses available on Egghead.io, LinkedIn Learning or Laracasts. If nothing internal is available then why not put together your own material from external research for others to benefit from?

Assessing For Promotion

Promotion will still come through the RTG process and annual calibration which happens each July. This framework will give you a clear idea and plan to be eligible for promotion in a non-subjective way.

Promotion is not always guaranteed for all roles, as some roles are limited based upon requirement of the business and available budget. However, we would look to assign budget each year for those we feel are in a position to be ready for promotion. This does not mean that pay rises or bonuses will not be available for exemplary performance regardless of availability of role.
